About the appeal
St Thomas’s
is a Grade 1 listed Georgian building. It has a very special plaster barrel
vault ceiling (not unlike that of St Martin’s in the Fields, London)
and also some fine stained glass with unusual windows by the Bromsgrove Guild.
It plays an important role in the life of the town centre of Stourbridge.
Because
of its age, it is in continual need of repair and maintenance to preserve
its heritage. We have made steady progress in repairing the external fabric
of the church and securing the integrity of the building. However, much remains
o be done, including works on the Barrel vault ceiling, the stained glass
windows and improvements to the facilities in the church hall. (see latest
fund raising news on the home page)
Work to date has been supported by generous donations from individuals in
many parts of the world, our own fund raising events and grants from various
trusts and government bodies including English Heritage. To date we have raised
and made good use of over £400,000; but to complete all that needs to
be done will require at least a further £250,000. It is this that we
are in the process of raising at the present. Donations to the appeal are
very welcome.
